The People’s Coalition Secures Near Sweep at Michigan Democratic Party Endorsement Convention Through Broad, Diverse Coalition
The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Endorsement Convention this weekend resulted in a near sweep for The People’s Coalition’s endorsed slate, powered by a broad, diverse coalition spanning the full spectrum of the party.
The People’s Coalition is proud to celebrate the victories of its endorsed candidates, including:
Eli Savit for Attorney General
Garlin Gilchrist for Secretary of State
Amir Makled for University of Michigan Regent
Shereef Akeel and Richard Mack Jr for Wayne State University Board of Governors
Tiffany Tilley and Judith Pritchett for State Board of Education
This outcome reflects a coalition and a movement that brought together progressives, leftists, centrists, and many who don’t fit neatly into any label—united instead by shared priorities, a belief in a people-first agenda, and a commitment to pushing back against corporate and special interest group influence in our politics. Across backgrounds, communities, and viewpoints, voters came together around practical, widely supported issues, such as affordable healthcare, accessible housing, fair wages, strong public schools, and human rights.
“These wins show what’s possible when people focus on real issues instead of labels,” said Rima Mohammad, Co-Founder of The People’s Coalition. “We saw a beautiful, diverse coalition come together around simple but urgent priorities that affect everyday life.”
“These results came from real organizing and real trust,” said Arika Lycan, Co-Founder of The People’s Coalition. “We built early, stayed consistent, and stayed focused on what people actually care about—and that’s what brought people out.”
The results were made possible by a coordinated, volunteer-powered effort across the state. The coalition mobilized thousands of people from across Michigan to attend and participate in the convention. Organizational partners helped lay the groundwork months in advance through the People’s Power tour and member organizing. A volunteer team of more than 70 people supported outreach efforts on the ground, helping mobilize and engage attendees throughout the weekend.
The results send a clear message: a people-first agenda, grounded in fairness and opportunity, has broad support, and that grassroots organizing and going directly to the people is critical to building it.
As momentum continues to grow, The People’s Coalition remains committed to building on this foundation—bringing more people in, strengthening partnerships, and continuing the work of delivering real results for communities across Michigan.

The People’s Coalition Statement on Division, Double Standards, and Hate Ahead of the Michigan Democratic Party Convention
We are witnessing, leading up to the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Convention, especially in the U-M Regent race, a coordinated and dangerous effort to divide our communities across identity lines.
From a dark money mailer deploying clear anti-Muslim and anti-Arab tropes, to an anonymous text weaponizing Israel to attack a candidate, these tactics are designed to manufacture division and turn this election into a false and harmful binary—pitting Jewish, and Arab and Muslim communities against one another. We reject this outright, and will not be fooled by this false narrative.
Equally disturbing is the blatant double standard in how these incidents are being addressed:
Just weeks ago, an opinion article was amplified within Party structures that trafficked in anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian narratives—casting Muslim and Arab political participation as suspicious, extremist, and illegitimate. That moment was met by silence from the Party, and the Caucus at fault. No immediate condemnation. No urgency. No accountability. Just an internal request that the MDP Jewish Caucus remove the post with this racist article. Then silence.
Yet when an anonymous text surfaced, referencing Israel in a way that impacted a Jewish candidate, same day condemnation from the Party was swift, public, and decisive.
This inconsistency is unacceptable.
Let us be clear: anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-Palestinian hate, and antisemitism are each just as real, harmful, and dangerous. When one type of hate is condemned immediately and others are repeatedly ignored, it sends a damaging message that some communities are valued more than others—that some are protected, while others are treated as second-tier and expected to endure harm in silence.
The double standards must be addressed and rectified.
We must name what is happening plainly: anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian propaganda is being normalized and amplified in ways that endanger candidates and communities alike. This is not just rhetoric—it has real consequences for safety, belonging, representation, and our democracy itself.
We are calling for a full and independent investigation into each of these incidents—including the dark money mailer, the anonymous text, and the amplification of harmful rhetoric—with a publicly released report detailing the findings and any accountability measures taken.
In response to the aforementioned opinion article and amplification of the article by an MDP Caucus, a broad coalition of organizations across Michigan has come together to demand accountability from party leadership. These organizations have formally signed onto a letter calling for:
A clear, public condemnation of this article and its harmful rhetoric from the MDP and its Chair
A formal public apology for amplifying this content
A commitment from Party leadership and caucuses to reject and actively challenge anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian hate, racism, and misinformation
The following organizations have signed onto this letter:
This diverse and growing coalition reflects a clear and unified message: our communities will not accept division, selective outrage, or silence in the face of hate.
We call on Party leadership to act with consistency, courage, and integrity. That means unequivocally condemning all forms of hate—without delay, without qualification, and without political calculation.
Anything less is complicity.
This moment demands moral clarity.
We will not let this weaponized hate divide us, or silence us. And we will not accept this double standard—period.

The People’s Coalition Calls for Accountability Within the Michigan Democratic Party
The People’s Coalition is calling for accountability following the circulation and amplification of an opinion article containing harmful and false rhetoric targeting Michigan Democratic and community leaders.
This opinion piece included inflammatory language, baseless allegations, and attacks on individuals based on religion, ethnicity, and identity—impacting Muslim, Arab, Palestinian, and Jewish Democratic leaders, as well as electeds and statewide candidates. The situation escalated when the opinion piece was amplified by the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Jewish Caucus on its official social media platform.
“This is not about political disagreement—it’s about whether the party will uphold its own Code of Conduct and protect members from discrimination,” said Rima Mohammad, Co-Founder of The People’s Coalition. “But this is also bigger than any one group or even the party itself. This is about all of us—about standing together to reject racism, divisive propaganda, and hate in our broader Michigan community.”
In response, three formal Code of Conduct complaints have been filed citing discrimination, harassment, and bullying against the author of the opinion article, the MDP Jewish Caucus and the MDP Jewish Caucus Chair. The complaints call for a full investigation and appropriate disciplinary action.
The Coalition is also launching a coordinated response, including a sign-on letter, call to action, and public engagement to ensure accountability.
“We cannot claim to be an inclusive community and “big tent” party while allowing harmful rhetoric to go unchecked,” said Arika Lycan, Co-Founder of The People’s Coalition. “This is about integrity, safety, and respect across Michigan.”
Call to Action
The People’s Coalition is urging organizations, elected officials, and community leaders and members to sign onto a solidarity letter, amplify the message, and support efforts to uphold shared values and reject hate in all forms.
“This is a defining moment,” Lycan added. “We either uphold our values with action, or we allow them to be undermined. We are choosing action—and we are asking others to stand with us.”

The People’s Coalition is in good company on this letter, with many of our peer organizations, and Michigan State and Local elected officials. We refuse to stand idly by while a genocide is carried out before our eyes, using weapons our US tax dollars have paid for.
A corresponding resolution will be released soon – we encourage our elected officials to review and sign on in support.
Moral cowardice is not an option at this point. We need our elected officials, from the federal, state, and local levels to oppose this genocide unequivocally, not just with your words and platitudes, but with your deeds, your actions, and your VOTES.

The People’s Coalition Statement on Michigan Medicine’s decision on gender-affirming care.
The People’s Coalition stands in solidarity with trans and nonbinary kids and their parents and families.
The news coming from Michigan Medicine about the discontinuation of puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones to minors is deeply concerning. Denying this care is cruel, short-sighted, and dangerous.
The People’s Coalition affirms our wholehearted support of trans, nonbinary and genderqueer Michiganders, kids and adults alike.
They deserve access to medically-necessary care, as does every Michigander!

The People's Coalition statement on the University of Michigan’s recent actions to dismantle its’ DEI offices and programs:
Shuttering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices and ending these valuable programs at the University of Michigan is a regressive step that undermines the University’s stated core values. DEI initiatives at their heart are not just about representation, but about ensuring that ALL students, faculty and staff, regardless of their background or identities, have an equitable chance to succeed in an environment that values their unique perspectives.
Eliminating these programs will disproportionately harm marginalized groups, perpetuating historical and current inequities at the University that these DEI efforts are designed to address.
At a time when the nation is grappling with issues of racial and social justice, dismantling DEI sends the message that equity is no longer a priority. The University of Michigan has been a leader in these programs, and should not be retreating from them. University of Michigan Regents & administration have positioned themselves against the needs of marginalized students, faculty and staff in favor of capitulation with the status quo. These actions speak to the importance of Regents who are aligned with the needs of the most vulnerable in our community.
We demand accountability & transparency from the administration & Regents: Reinvest in equity for all students, faculty & staff, and protect our most vulnerable communities. We intend to put our support behind strong Regent candidates that truly speak for the communities they represent.

The People’s Coalition centered our first major action around the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP)’s February 22nd Convention in Detroit. We stayed true to our values and mission: Democracy in Action, where every voice can be heard and every community will have a seat at the table. The strength of the Democratic Party lies in our diversity and our shared commitment to progress.
Our coalition is a multi-faith, multi-racial group of people from across Michigan, committed to achieving change within the MDP and beyond, and ultimately benefiting our communities through elected leadership, engagement and participation.
The People’s Coalition had a very successful day with many accomplishments at this Saturday’s MDP Convention - what an experience! Our candidates and coalition members mobilized for the MDP Convention, and we earned increased representation and participation across various caucuses and congressional districts! We’re proud of all the candidates we supported and endorsed, and more broadly of our pro-humanity, pro-justice allies who also had wins on Saturday.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for showing up at the MDP Convention and supporting our candidates and celebrating our wins!
